- In most of higher plants, sucrose is the primary organic carbon that is translocated through phloem from photosynthetic leaves (source) into non-photosynthetic tissues (sink) such as seed, fruit and root. After phloem unloading in sinks, sucrose needs to be degraded into hexoses or their derivates for diverse uses. Sugars, including sucrose, hexoses and trehalose, also act as signaling molecules to regulate gene expression, hence, plant development. Here we focus on the molecular and biochemcial characterization of key genes and proteins controlling sugar transport and metabolism in plants. We also discuss how the expression and activity of these key players regulate biosynthesis of major biopolymers including starch and cellulose.
